A Chinese market leader has imposed new restrictions on its popular game Honor of Kings, limiting playtime to two hours for people under the age of 18.
The restrictions came against the backdrop of some children who sometimes remain glued to their screens for a day, a phenomenon that has long been criticized in China for its negative consequences, including poor eyesight, lower school results, lack of physical activity and the risk of addiction.
In an indication of the weight of video games in this giant country of 1.4 billion people, companies operating in the sector generated revenues of nearly $ 20 billion in the first half of 2021 alone.
The rules adopted in China originally forbid minors to play online between 10 pm and 8 am.
The group, which previously restricted playing time in adopting facial recognition technology to prevent people under the age of 18 from playing at night, has tightened the rules further. From now on, minors will only be able to play for one hour per day during school time and two hours during holidays on the only game involved in these measures at the moment.
