A range of environmental disasters have been reported worldwide, including deadly rains and floods in Germany, China and India, volcanic eruptions in Azerbaijan, massive wildfires in Turkey and Italy, and tropical storms in the United States in July.

Here is a timeline of the July disasters:

2 July:

  • The death toll has risen to 719 as the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC) continues to experience a heat wave, according to the BC. Coroners Service.

3 July:

  • Twenty people are still missing after landslides swept through homes in the southwest of the Japanese capital, Tokyo.

5 July:

  • A powerful explosion occurred in the Caspian Sea near the coast of the Azerbaijani capital Baku, which the state oil company said was caused by a volcanic eruption.

July 9:

New York City, the largest city in the United States, is drying up, as Tropical Storm Elsa continues to race on the Northeast Coast.

July 11:

A massive forest fire in Nea Stira on the island of Evia near Athens prompts authorities to evacuate two villages.

July 15:

  • At least two people were killed and three others missing after floods and landslides caused by torrential rains hit Turkey’s Black Sea region.

July 18:

  • More than 150 people died and more than 650 were injured as the worst floods in more than 200 years hit Germany.
  • At least 15 people were killed and several others injured when a house collapsed and a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Mumbai, India’s financial hub.

July 21:

  • Severe floods have killed at least 56 people in central China’s Henan Province due to torrential rains.

July 22:

  • About 200 people have been evacuated due to flooding in the Black Sea region of eastern Turkey.

July 23:

The death toll has risen to 50 in rain-related accidents in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

July 25:

  • Many homes and basements were inundated in Belgium, which experienced flooding for the second time in just over a week.

  • A large forest fire in Turkey’s Mediterranean region of Manavgat has left many injured, according to the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

July 29:

  • Flash floods caused by torrential rain claimed the lives of at least 40 people in the eastern Afghan province of Nuristan.
  • The death toll in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district has risen to at least 24 due to floods and landslides triggered by days of heavy monsoon rains.
  • The death toll has reached 99 as a result of the unprecedented floods that hit China.

July 30:

  • Forest fires in Sicily in southern Italy are affecting several places, especially downtown Catania.

July 31:

  • Turkey controls 74 forest fires across the country, killing at least six people.
