Most doctors advise people to eat “at least two servings of fish per week,” one of which should be fatty. Will it be harmful if I eat more than the recommended amount?
Dr Normand Hard (UK) said: “We see the potential for adverse effects with high intakes of omega-3 fatty acids.”
According to his research, too much oily fish can cause immune problems. Excessive exposure to omega-3s has been found to alter immune function, which may lead to an impaired response to viral or bacterial infections.
A research article published in the journal Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids details the results.
“A dysfunctional immune response to excessive consumption of omega-3 fatty acids can affect the body’s ability to fight off microbial pathogens such as bacteria,” the report says. “Our main concern here is the hyper-supplemented person who can take high doses of omega-3 supplements and consume four to five omega-3 foods per day. This is likely to cause someone to over-count.”
Dr. Normand’s research builds on an earlier discovery by Jennifer Fenton. Her research showed that feeding rats large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids increased the risk of developing colitis and impaired immunity.
The National Health Service warned that “oily fish can contain low levels of pollutants that can build up in the body. For this reason, there is a limit to the number of meals some groups should have each week.”
