The US Senate will vote Saturday on President Joe Biden’s plan to invest $1.2 trillion in US infrastructure, a key step before it is put to a final vote and then sent to the House of Representatives.

After hours of consensus attempts, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced just before midnight Thursday Friday that the procedural vote would take place Saturday afternoon.

Schumer criticized Republicans for their “numerous objections” that impeded voting efforts on the amendments “all day” Thursday, but he remains confident the bill will likely be passed. He had previously said that lawmakers were “on the verge of reaching an agreement.”

“We’d really like to get this important bill done, so we’re going to have a meeting on Saturday afternoon to vote” on the text, Chuck Schumer said.

If introduced in the Senate on Saturday, the text would need the approval of at least 10 Republicans and 50 Democratic senators to clear the way for a vote. It will then be put to a final vote by a simple majority in the Senate, on the same day or Sunday.

If it is approved, it will be put to a vote in the House of Representatives in the coming weeks in preparation for its final approval, and then it will be sent to the Democratic President of the United States for his signature.

That, if it happens, would constitute a resounding victory in deeply divided Washington for the former senator Biden, who affirms his ability to overcome difficulties.

The result of a rare consensus among Republican and Democratic senators, the ambitious plan provides for $550 billion in new federal spending on roads, bridges and transportation, but also for high-speed Internet and efforts to combat climate change.

The plan totals $1.2 trillion – the equivalent of Spain’s 2020 GDP – taking into account other public funds that have already been allocated.

The White House said Thursday that makes it “the largest long-term investment in our infrastructure and competitiveness in nearly a century.”
