Chinese researchers have developed a heart pacemaker that works without a battery, but rather draws energy from the heartbeat itself.

The new device relies on collecting the kinetic energy of the heart, which is formed by pumping blood through this organ.

According to the US news agency “United Press International”, researchers are currently conducting further studies and experiments for this invention with animals to verify its safety, before adopting it for human use.

According to Yi Ziran, a mechanical engineering researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, the difference between the new pacemaker and the old one lies in the way of power supply, which paves the way for the development of many implantable biomedical devices in the future.

“The practical force of the heart is 0.5 Newton, so the output power should be about 192 microwatts. For a commercial pacemaker, at least about 10 microwatts is enough for its normal operation,” Yi noted.

Current defibrillators are connected to external batteries via wires, with the battery powering the life-saving device, allowing it to maintain a regular heartbeat.
