The Lebanese Prime Minister-designate, Najib Mikati, announced, Tuesday evening, that he is seeking to form a government of “specialists” in Lebanon, in the third attempt the country is witnessing after the failure of Saad Hariri and Mustafa Adib and their apology, and the resignation of Hassan Diab, who is currently heading a caretaker government.

Hariri and Adeeb had previously announced the formation of a government of specialists, but they did not succeed in doing so due to major differences. Likewise, the government of Hassan Diab did not succeed in steadfastness, and he resigned following widespread protests and the explosion of the port of Beirut.

Mikati added that he will inform President Michel Aoun of the results of the parliamentary consultations he held on Tuesday, to work on “forming a government of specialists as soon as possible.”

The Lebanese Prime Minister-designate began non-binding parliamentary consultations in Parliament, the day after he was assigned to form a new government from the Presidential Palace in Baabda.

Mikati stated that he would “constantly visit the Republican Palace in Baabda (east of Beirut) to exchange opinions with the country’s president, in order to reach the formation of the government as soon as possible.”

In light of two political and economic crises, President Aoun commissioned, on Monday, former Prime Minister Najib Mikati, to form a new government.

Mikati, 65, received the support of 72 parliamentarians (out of 128), including the “Future Movement” bloc, led by former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, and the “Hezbollah” bloc.

Mikati is a parliamentarian from the city of Tripoli (in the north) since 2018, and he came to politics from the business sector, and he is the third figure, after Hariri and Hassan Diab, whom Aoun assigned to form a government after the resignation of the Diab government, following the explosion of the port of Beirut, which killed more than 200 people and wounding thousands.

Since 2005, this is the third mandate to form a government for Mikati, who is seen as a consensual candidate to end stalemate due to political differences.

And in mid-July, Hariri announced his apology for not forming a government after disagreements with President Aoun.

The process of forming a government in Lebanon usually lasts for several months, due to differences between the political forces.

The name of the Lebanese businessman, and former Prime Minister Najib Mikati, topped the social networking sites in Lebanon and a number of Arab countries after he was assigned to form the new government.

Lebanese opinions were divided on the communication sites between welcoming and not optimistic.
