A new study shows that people who eat a diet full of vegetables, fruits and berries have a 20% lower risk of cognitive decline. The research was presented in the journal Neurology.
All about the natural flavonoids found in plants. They are considered powerful antioxidants. Scientists note that flavones and anthocyanins may have the greatest protective effects.
The study included 49.5 thousand women (average age 48 years) and 27.8 thousand men (average age 51 years). Over the course of 20 years of observation, subjects filled out questionnaires several times, in which they indicated the frequency of use of different products. The participants’ cognitive abilities were assessed twice.
The group with the highest amounts of flavonoids found in plants averaged 600 milligrams each day. After adjusting for factors such as age and total calorie intake, it was found that people who consumed more flavonoids had a lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those who neglected the use of flavonoids.
The researchers also studied individual flavonoids. Flavones, found in some spices, yellow or orange fruits and vegetables, were highly protective and were associated with a 38% reduction in risk of cognitive decline, equivalent to 3-4 years.
