Scientists from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and the University of Hamburg, Germany, confirmed that it is possible that hearing problems in adults are a sign of a higher risk of dementia.
Scientists conducted a study in which more than 80,000 adults over the age of 60 participated. It turns out that those who had trouble hearing due to their noisy environments were at a higher risk of developing dementia in the future.
However, hearing impairment in and of itself is not a symptom of dementia, but only indicates the possible onset of it, allowing patients to take measures to prevent the “cognitive impairment” that leads to dementia later, according to the Science Alert website.
After about 11 years, 1,285 participants developed dementia. Participants with poor hearing were twice as likely to develop dementia as those with good hearing. Hearing was assessed by the ability to distinguish words against a background of ‘white noise’ or simple indirect noise.
Scientists have concluded that protecting the auditory canals with headphones and earplugs can help reduce the risk factor for dementia, which affects millions of people around the world.
