Many suffer from chronic infections, and there are many types of treatments that deal with these infections, while some studies have raised a question about the possibility of eating certain foods that help curb inflammation?

According to a study published by Healthline, and prepared by researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine, incorporating fermented foods into the diet may help reduce inflammation.

And while inflammation is a normal part of the healing process, the constant stress that leads to chronic inflammation can have serious health effects.

The study says that eating fermented foods such as kefir (also called kefir, which is fermented milk) or kimchi (a popular Korean food that is a mixture of garlic and chili) can improve overall microbial diversity, which may help reduce inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is linked to an increased risk of a range of health problems, including heart disease, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.

While some medications may help treat chronic inflammation, researchers are investigating whether diet can play a role in reducing inflammation overall, although diet has not been tested as an alternative treatment for medications.

“This small study helps explain how food and fermented fiber alter the microbiome,” says Dr. Elena Ivanina, M.D., director of gastroenterology and motility at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

Inflammation is a normal response from the body’s immune system. When the body is stressed from things like infection and injury, the immune system releases antibodies and proteins along with increased blood flow to help the body heal.

In the short term, inflammation can help the body heal, but over time if the inflammatory response persists, the immune system can target healthy tissue, potentially causing damage.

“The immune system can cause collateral damage,” says Ken Cadwell, M.D., Recanati Family Professor of Microbiology at the Skirball Institute, at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine.

“When the immune system causes severe damage or becomes restless, you can develop chronic inflammatory diseases,” he said.
