The death toll from the explosion that targeted, on Monday, people shopping for Eid al-Adha in a market in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, rose to 22 dead and 47 wounded, according to a government medical source.

The source, who is from the Baghdad Health Department, told Anadolu Agency that the explosion that took place in the Al-Waheilat market in Sadr City left, according to an indefinite toll, 22 dead and 47 wounded.

The source, who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media, added that the Ministry of Health has mobilized all its staff in hospitals to receive the victims of the explosion and treat the wounded.

The previous outcome indicated the killing of 4 people and the injury of 15 others, according to Baghdad Police Captain Hatem Al-Jabri to Anatolia.

The Iraqi Defense Security Media Cell confirmed, in a brief statement, that the explosion took place, and that there were deaths and injuries because of it, without providing an immediate toll.

No party has claimed responsibility for the explosion until 17:10 GMT, but the Iraqi authorities usually accuse the terrorist organization “ISIS” of being behind such operations.

For his part, Yahya Rasoul, a spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, said in a statement that the latter had ordered the arrest of the commander of the security force responsible for securing the Al-Waheilat market.

Al-Kazemi also ordered, according to the same source, “the opening of an investigation by the Baghdad Operations Command (affiliated with the army) into the incident.”

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over ISIS by restoring its entire territory, which was estimated at about a third of the country’s area, which the organization invaded in the summer of 2014.

However, the terrorist organization still maintains sleeper cells in large areas of Iraq and launches attacks between different periods.
