Today, Monday, the Jordanian street is awaiting the date of the sentencing hearing for the former royal court chief, Basem Awadallah, and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, who are accused of what is known as the “sedition file.”
On Monday, the State Security Court will hold a sentencing hearing against Awadallah and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, after 5 previous sessions.

Al-Afif added that “the decision of the State Security Court is recognizable,” noting that he demanded the summoning of 26 witnesses, including Prince Hamzah, other princes, and some officials; “However, the court saw their testimonies as unproductive, and refused their attendance, so I am waiting for the verdict, and if it is not in my client’s favour, I will appeal the court’s procedures to the Court of Cassation.”
Al-Afif strongly denied being subjected to any kind of security pressure in this field, saying: “I am the one who requested the presence of the princes to testify, and I was not subjected to any pressure.”
Last Monday, Al-Afif presented a plea to defend the defendants in the case, and said that he focused on several points, most notably “the failure to accept the evidence of the defense, and to challenge the legitimacy of the court formation mechanism.”
He revealed that he had applied for bail for the defendants three times, which the court rejected, and said: “I think that a case of this magnitude is not so easy to accept bail.”
On the reason for the speedy setting of a hearing to pronounce the verdict, Al-Afif said that this was due to the fact that the court “did not listen to all the defense statements, such as the 26 witnesses, which shortened the procedures.”
The indictment issued against the defendant, Bassem Awadallah and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, in the case of sedition by the court’s attorney general included the two charges of felony incitement to oppose the existing political regime in the Kingdom.
They were charged with a felony of carrying out acts that endanger the safety and security of society, causing sedition, possessing a narcotic substance with intent to abuse it, and taking narcotics.
