The report indicated that it is the first of its kind to be born in the zoo since the orangutan returned to the zoo again after a tragic fire in December 2019.
Orangutans are facing extinction in the wild and conservationists around the world hope that birth will give new hope to save them from extinction..
The report indicated that the Sumatran orangutan has been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).IUCN).
“The Sumatran orangutan is one of the most endangered large mammals, so the safe arrival of a new baby is an incredibly special moment,” said Claire Barry, one of the zoo’s lead specialists. It’s so nice to see her hugging him so softly.”
The new baby is a vital boost to the international conservation breeding programme, which works to ensure a safety net for these endangered animals in the world’s most advanced zoo.
