The US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, announced on Monday that it had targeted Iranian facilities in the border area between Syria and Iraq.

The Pentagon said in a statement, that US planes carried out an aerial bombardment of weapons storage facilities for pro-Iranian militias in two locations in Syria and another in Iraq, in response to attacks targeting American personnel and sites in Iraq.

The US Defense Department spokesman, John Kirby, indicated that the US military launched the air strikes, at the direction of President Joe Biden, and targeted facilities used by Iranian-backed militias in the border area between Iraq and Syria.

He pointed out that the fighters used in the attack what is known as “precision-guided munitions”, which the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) defines as “a guided weapon aimed at destroying a target and reducing collateral damage, including missiles launched from the air and ships, and guided bombs.”

He added that the targets of the strike had “command and control and logistical capabilities.”

“The selected targets are facilities used by the Iranian-backed militia network,” said Jessica McNulty, a spokeswoman for the State Department, and that “eliminating them will disrupt and weaken the operational capacity of the militia groups and deter additional attacks.”

For its part, the Syrian regime’s “SANA” news agency confirmed that shelling took place in the “Al-Bukamal” area in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

In turn, Iraqi websites affiliated with the Popular Mobilization reported that at least four were killed in the American raids, noting that “the bombing targeted sites of the Hezbollah Brigades, Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada’ Brigade, and Haidarion Forces.”
