The Saudi Geological Survey reported that it had discovered parts of the remains of an extinct whale about 37 million years ago, in the northwest of the Kingdom.

According to the commission, this discovery is the first of its kind in the Kingdom, noting that the discovered whale dates back to the Eocene era.

The CEO of the Saudi Geological Survey, Abdullah bin Muftar Al-Shamrani, said that this discovery serves research and scientific work, especially in the field of fossils, pointing to the importance of these discoveries worldwide.

Al-Shamrani considered that this discovery would “enrich the scientific arena because it represents an important historical and fossil depth, revealing to us the secrets of geological ages and ancient marine environments.”

The official pointed out that a specialized team from the Fossils Department of the Geological Survey surveyed the calcareous cliffs near the Qurayyat and Haditha governorates, to infer and identify the types of marine fossils and their deposition environments in the north of the Kingdom 37 million years ago.
