Suicide is the individual’s ending of his life by himself, which comes as a tragic reaction to stressful life situations, as the methods that individuals follow in committing suicide differ according to the surrounding environment and culture, and also differ from one country to another, and according to the availability of suicide methods.

Professor of Psychology at the University of Jordan, Dr. Muhammad Shuqairat, told Jordan News Online, “There are a number of definitions of suicide, including considering suicide as a final solution to a temporary problem. Anyone who suffers from a specific problem accepts to end his life, and there are many people who know suicide. It is the death of a person from injury, poisoning, or suffocation by himself, meaning that the person intends to kill himself in this case.”

He added, “The methods of carrying out suicide differ from one person to another, depending on the availability of suicide methods that he can use, such as the presence of a pistol or firearms in the home among people, as the most common method for males to carry out suicide, according to scientific studies that most people Those who intend to commit suicide kill themselves after a while of purchasing a weapon, and in the event that a firearm is not available, they resort to thinking about a white weapon, or throwing themselves over a bridge and the like, and it may be based on the abuse of toxic substances or medicines, and this is what girls may resort to often “.

Al-Shukairat pointed out that studies have shown that the United States is the most common suicide rate, with 90 people committing suicide every day.

Gender suicide

With regard to suicides between the sexes, he continued, women attempt suicide two or three times more than men, but men are four times more than women, indicating that the percentage of men who die by suicide is more than women, due to the fact that men when they commit suicide use Lethal weapons, while women may resort to drugs or poisoning or injure themselves of this kind and thus can be saved.”
Shuqairat revealed that there are also differences in cultures for the suicide process, so the suicide rate is greater in European countries, while in Islamic countries it is less, and this is as a result of the interference of religion or economic conditions, pointing out that there may be a tradition of suicide, such as that A person commits suicide, and a number of affected people imitate him.

Adolescents and suicide

He continued, the suicide rate varies according to different age groups. In recent years, adolescents and children have increased the rate of suicidal ideation, as suicide is transmitted by infection, such as when a school student commits suicide and a number of his colleagues imitate it.
He added, “There is a difference between suicide and suicidal ideation, where the number of people who think about suicide is greater than the number of people who actually commit suicide, and often people who commit suicide may not talk about their inclinations towards it.

Shugairat said, it is necessary to identify the main causes that lead to suicide, including psychological and physical illnesses, loss of family and loved ones, low financial situation, and inability to provide for the basic needs of life.

the easiest way

Professor of Psychology at the University of Jordan, Dr. Ibrahim Zureikat, believes that the individual’s willingness to commit suicide to get rid of life, comes as the easiest way to do this act.

He pointed out that some people commit suicide in public places, and the reason is that there is a social problem that he suffers from, and this problem has not been resolved, so he blames society, and his goal in this behavior is to attract the attention of society.

He continued, and some resort to domestic suicide, that is, accepting suicide away from people’s eyes, and the reason for this is their attempt to escape from an unsatisfactory psychological reality, and a weakness in the person’s psychological structure and possession of irrational thoughts, and also suicide may be the result of the individual’s suffering from mental illnesses. , such as depression and schizophrenia, and therefore chooses an unattractive method of suicide.

He also adds that some choose the method available to them to commit suicide, whether with a specific weapon, cutting an artery, taking medicines, drinking chlorine or hanging, and also the method of suicide varies in different cultures and countries.

For his part, Professor of Sociology at Al-Balqa Applied University, Dr. Hussein Al-Khuzai, said that the shock strength of the condition or problem suffered by the suicide before he committed suicide is what determines the way he will carry out his suicide.

He added, usually the quick and urgent problems facing a person, and to stop thinking about any solution to them because of their severity and strength, choose the easiest and closest method available to him, such as shooting bullets, committing suicide by throwing himself from high areas, or drinking poisons.

Al-Khuzaie stressed that the third method, which includes suicide in protest against a specific situation, such as dismissal from work or study, or revenge against a certain person, for example, by setting himself on fire or committing suicide in an open way in a public place, the most dangerous type of suicide is the one that is without planning, which It is caused by a specific challenge, which is done by throwing oneself from high places.
