On Saturday, Tunisian Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi expressed his satisfaction with the meeting he had with the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, on Thursday, while Saeed denied, on Friday, that there was mediation with the Speaker of Parliament to overcome the differences between them.
Saeed said: “Since yesterday, there has been a lot of talk about mediation…there is no mediation, no mediator, and no middle solutions, the truth is the truth.”
He added: “I do not have a problem with people, but I have a problem with a system that still exists and continues to abuse the Tunisian people, and I am still on the covenant and in the same position.”
“I am not seeking to settle scores, even though there are people who are in prison because they tampered with the capabilities of the Tunisian people,” he said during Saeed’s reception, Secretary General of the “People’s Movement” Zuhair Maghzaoui (without giving names).
He added: “We respect the positions, institutions, the word and the covenant, but I do not accept in any way that we meet on compromise solutions, the truth is between and the false is between,” as he described it.
Saeed asked: “If an agreement is reached on a dialogue, the question arises as to what will we engage in dialogue?”
He considered that the current constitution “is based on obstruction, I obstruct you and you obstruct me, and we are not ready to make the right of the Tunisian people a subject of bargaining or bargaining.”
He pointed out that “whoever wants to talk about the national dialogue, the issues and solutions are clear. The problem lies in the national choices, and the choices stemming from the will of the Tunisian people.”
For his part, Ghannouchi condemned what he said was a distortion of his statements and that they were unbearable.
This came in response to what was reported on social media that Ghannouchi canceled an interview he had with a television channel at the request of the President of the Republic.
A statement from the office of the President of the Ennahda Movement said that Ghannouchi, during his meeting with a number of leaders and youth of the Ennahda movement abroad, “did not mention that the cancellation of his dialogue with one of the national television channels came at the request of the President of the Republic, or any other party,” stressing that this was his “decision.” Personally, I took it based on an assessment of the situation after opening up the prospects for dialogue to get out of the current political crisis.”
The statement strongly condemned what it described as “all attempts to distort the words of Professor Rashid Ghannouchi or make him unbearable,” adding that his words came “in the context of valuing dialogue and the policy of outstretched hands, given that shipping and counter-charging only lead to tension and escalation.”
The statement said that Ghannouchi “expressed his satisfaction with the atmosphere of calm that began to prevail in the political scene,” calling on all political components to “engage in it.”
The statement stressed Ghannouchi’s keenness to “reach a comprehensive solution to the political crisis in the country, within the framework of constructive dialogue with the President of the Republic and with all national forces.”
And on Thursday, Khalil Al-Baroumi, who is in charge of media in the Ennahda movement, said: “This morning a long meeting took place between Saeed and Ghannouchi (also the head of the Ennahda movement, 53 deputies out of 217), and the meeting revolved around the situation of the country and it was a positive meeting.”
Saeed and Ghannouchi’s meeting came after a rupture that lasted about 6 months, when they last met last January.
Tunisia is going through a political crisis due to differences between Said and Prime Minister Hisham El Meshishi, due to a cabinet reshuffle announced by the latter on January 16.
Despite Parliament’s ratification of the amendment, Saeed rejects the invitation of the new ministers to take the constitutional oath before him, considering that the amendment was marred by “violations”, which Al-Mashishi rejects.
