On Sunday, Afghanistan expressed its initial agreement to hold a tripartite meeting with Iran and Pakistan on regional support for the Afghan peace process, amid stalled negotiations between the government and the “Taliban” movement.
A statement by the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Minister Muhammad Hanif Atmar met with Muhammad Ibrahim Taherian, the special representative of the Iranian Foreign Minister.
According to the statement, Taherian briefed the Afghan Foreign Minister on the results of his recent visit to Pakistan, noting “the importance of regional consensus and strengthening relations between the three countries,” proposing “a tripartite meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.”
For his part, Atmer stressed “the importance of further strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries, and the need to further strengthen and expand bilateral and multilateral relations,” expressing Kabul’s “approval of the tripartite meeting plan in principle,” describing the holding of this meeting as useful in strengthening regional consensus for the success of the peace process. “.
Relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan were tense, with Kabul accusing Islamabad of harboring the leaders of the “Taliban” movement, while Pakistan accused the Afghan authorities of allowing anti-government militants to launch attacks against Pakistan from the territory of Afghanistan.
Pakistan affirms its support for reducing the intensity of violence in Afghanistan, and its desire to open a new page in relations with Kabul, and to support the peace process between the Afghan government and the “Taliban.”
Last April, outgoing Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for his country and Pakistan to play a greater role in managing the peace process in Afghanistan, because they are the most important and effective neighbors of Afghanistan, as he described it.
Iran has confirmed on more than one occasion its support for peace efforts in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of foreign forces from there, as the US presence in the neighboring country is a source of concern to it, and it hopes to solve the crisis of hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees on its soil. Officials in Tehran confirmed on previous occasions that the visits of Taliban delegations to Iran were coordinated with the Afghan government.
