Yahoo News said that a number of members of the US Congress are preparing to interrogate the head of the Egyptian intelligence service, Abbas Kamel, on accusations that the agency participated in the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, by providing the assassination team with narcotics.
On Tuesday, a human rights group called on members of the US Congress to interrogate the Egyptian intelligence chief about the Yahoo News report, which was published on June 14, and revealed that the Saudi plane that carried the Saudi team that killed Khashoggi stopped in Cairo; To obtain illegal drugs used in the assassination.
Sarah Leah Whitson, Executive Director of Democracy in the Arab World Now (DAWN), said that “the reports that have emerged about the Egyptian authorities providing the deadly drugs used in the execution of Jamal Khashoggi are shocking,” and “there should be an investigation in Congress.” on this matter.
The Yahoo News report indicated that the killers injected these substances into Khashoggi’s left arm; to hasten his death.
The site pointed out that this information was obtained from notes in the secret interrogations that were conducted for the killers by the Saudi authorities.
The website revealed that these data indicate the possible presence of Egyptian accomplices with the killers, especially since the narcotics were delivered to them inside Cairo airport.
He pointed out that the “Tiger Squad”, which committed the crime, was intended to kill Khashoggi with this injection, before he was kidnapped to a plane carrying him to Saudi Arabia.
Yahoo News revealed that a number of US senators are preparing to ask Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel, who is visiting Washington this week to meet with US intelligence officials and members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, whether Egyptian intelligence officials have delivered drugs, or helped facilitate its delivery.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee is trying to arrange its own meeting with Kamel, and one of its members, Representative Tom Malinowski, the former deputy secretary of state for human rights, said that if the meeting does happen, he intends to fully question Khashoggi’s assassination. “I’d like them to know that we know that they helped the Saudis kill a US-based journalist,” he told Yahoo News.
For her part, Sarah Leah Whitson said it was “impossible for a Saudi government plane to land in Egypt without the knowledge and permission of the Egyptian authorities.” “It is impossible for anyone other than Egyptian government officials to coordinate with Saudi government officials regarding the delivery of the drugs that we now know were used in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.”
The report, published by “Yahoo News”, indicated that there is evidence that Egyptian intelligence may have provided training for the Tiger team, in addition to previous support for the Saudi kidnappings ordered by Mohammed bin Salman.
The website quoted an informed Saudi source as saying that “the Egyptians helped the Tiger team kidnap Saudi Prince Saud bin Saif Al-Nasr from Italy in 2015”, and he has not been heard from since then.
Spokesmen for the Egyptian government in Cairo and Washington refused to respond to Yahoo News’ questions.
