A recent study by cardiologist Kim Williams found that a heart-healthy diet not only reduces the risk of heart disease, but also helps prevent COVID-19.

Heart disease and COVID-19
People with heart disease are more likely to develop a severe case of COVID-19. And if you live with other underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or obesity, both can have a significant impact on your overall health.
“This is particularly challenging because heart disease and COVID-19 have the same risk factors for a poor outcome,” Williams says.

Here is a list of risk factors that contribute to the worst outcomes of heart disease and HIV:
diabetes
high pressure
high fat
obesity

“If you want to avoid the negative outcomes of cardiovascular disease or even COVID-19, it’s time to change your diet,” Williams stresses.

The importance of eating a healthy diet
Williams’ study shows that a whole plant-based diet is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and will eventually help reduce the risk of COVID-19.

“Heart inflammation is reduced when you eat a whole plant-based diet, and this helps strengthen your immune system,” he says. “There are more than 20,000 kinds of vegetables, fruits, grains, and beans on the planet.”

Food choices remain a major factor in overall risk. For example, foods that contain large amounts of refined carbohydrates, among other ingredients, can increase the risk of heart diseases such as obesity and diabetes when eaten frequently. This lowers your immune system and increases your risk of contracting COVID-19.
